Gravas Del Maipo Syrah
Gravas del Maipo is born as a tribute by Concha y Toro to the majestic Andes and the hidden gravel from silently eroded, displaced and molded soils year after year in the thousands of years old Maipo basin. It reflects the challenge of positioning Chile as a high-quality wine producer, together with the constant and passionate search for identifying those terroirs that faithfully express the character of a grape variety.
VARIETY: 87% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. ORIGIN: • Quinta de Maipo (Syrah) D.O. Buin, Maipo Valley. • Pirque Viejo Vineyard (Cabernet Sauvignon) D.O. Pirque, Maipo Valley. SOIL: Alluvial in origin, with a clay-loam first horizon. Gravel predominates deep below the surface, resulting in a soil with good permeability and low in nutrient content. CLIMATE: Mediterranean with a long dry season and precipitation concentrated between June and August. HARVEST: Hand picked. 8th – 21st May. AGING: 16 months in French oak barrels (68% new, 32% second use). WINEMAKER NOTES: • Colour: Intense violet red. • Aroma: Tremendous complexity and intensity marked by dark fruit. Blackberries and blueberries intermingle with notes of chocolate and tobacco. • Palate: Starts soft and sweet and then evolves to show volume, breadth, and balance. Bright fruit and freshness linger on the long finish.
